These words, delivered from speaker towers emerging from the immaculately manicured grounds of Teletubbieland, herald the arrival of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po.
/ triangular top / sky-blue fur and red handbag / it's Tinky Winky / with straight antenna / Dipsy searches for his hat / among the green hills / curly ariel / autumnal fur of yellow / Laa Laa throws her ball / sporting a red circle / Po will sing Fidie Fidie / and push her scooter

Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po are, of course, mutants. Generations of exposure to the after-effects of a nuclear holocaust, and subsequent genetic tinkering at the hands of what's left of Earth's masters, safe underground in their fallout shelters, have rendered them docile and weak- minded. The race of Teletubbies is nurtured with Tubbie-toast and Tubbie- custard, and from time to time a Teletubbie is culled to provide dietary variation for the hidden overseers.

This much is clear from the episodes of Teletubbies broadcast to the nation every weekday at 10.00 am on BBC2. But there remain mysteries whose answers are only hinted at in the program. Come with me on a voyage of discovery, as I unravel The Riddle Of The Teletubbies.
